Welcome to ACLGIM

mcmahon.jpgThe Association of Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine (ACLGIM) is a professional home for academic General Internists in Departments of Internal Medicine. As academic General Internal Medicine is the core discipline for Department of Internal Medicine, members of ACLGIM have pivotal roles in leading the; educational, research, quality/safety, and clinical missions of academic Departments of Internal Medicine.

While originally founded as an Association of Chiefs of General Internal Medicine, the Association as it matured, recognized the importance of including all the key leadership in academic General Internal Medicine including; Chiefs of General Internal Medicine, Chiefs of Hospital Medicine, directors of residency clinics, directors of ambulatory clinical practices, directors of hospital medicine programs, general medicine leaders focused on VA healthcare, as well as general medicine leaders in an academic environment who have risen within their organizational structure to institutional roles of prominence, such as chairs of Internal Medicine, Dean's, CIOs, CMO's, and the like.

The expertise and perspective afforded by academic generalists in whatever location they practice, or important leadership roles they occupy either within their own division, department, or larger organization, is enhanced by the active involvement and networking with academic peers across the country.

I welcome all such leaders to ACLGIM and would encourage everyone to scan their own organization for General Internal Medicine leaders who could enhance our mission of improving academic General Internal Medicine and with it, academic Internal Medicine. We have found that engaging leaders both within our own organizations, and networking with academic General Internal Medicine leaders from across the country, to be an effective means of addressing key and common issues.  We welcome you to join ACLGIM and help continue to advance academic General Internal Medicine!
