Introduction

SGIM provides students, residents, and fellows with the means to explore and clarify their career interests and meet and exceed their chosen aspirations. As an Associate member, you will gain access to networking and career development resources, as well as an international network of primary care physicians largely based in academic and community health centers.

Investing in GIM Membership Program

The 2026 Investing in GIM Membership Program is now closed and no longer accepting applications.
The 2027 program will open in October 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

In general, physicians who are trained in Internal Medicine and currently enrolled in the first year of a full-time fellowship program that is a:

General internal medicine fellowship
Hospital medicine fellowship
Geriatrics fellowship
Hospice & palliative care fellowship
Health services research fellowship
Health policy fellowship
Obesity medicine fellowship
HIV medicine fellowship
Addiction medicine fellowship
LGBTQ+ health fellowship
Fellowship program in quality and safety (VA Quality Scholars and VA Chief Residents in Quality and Safety are both eligible)
Fellowship not included above that is directly related to the practice of, research in, or education of General Internal Medicine
GIM Ambulatory or Primary Care Chief Residents are eligible for this program

Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis

How to Apply

Current SGIM Members:

Login to your SGIM member account
Click the Profile Icon or Photo located in the top right-hand corner & select “My Profile”
Under "Membership," click "Renew"
Under “Trainee Membership Programs,” select “SGIM Associate Member (Complimentary 1st Year Fellow) Dues”
Provide answers to all the demographic questions (Type of Fellowship)
Follow the remaining prompts

Prospective SGIM Members:

Login to your SGIM account or Create an account as directed
Click the Profile Icon or Photo located in the top right-hand corner & select “Individual Membership”
Select “SGIM”
Under “Trainee Membership Programs,” select “SGIM Associate Member (Complimentary 1st Year Fellow) Dues”
Provide answers to all the demographic questions (Type of Fellowship)
Follow the remaining prompts

SGIM will review each applicant’s eligibility and contact the first 65 eligible applicants with their complimentary membership information.

National Young Scholars Program

The 2026 National Young Scholars in GIM Program
is now closed and no longer accepting applications.

The 2027 program will open in December 2026.

Who should apply?

Medical students, interns, and residents who are interested in attending the annual meeting of SGIM are invited to apply for a scholarship. While it is not mandatory to present at the meeting, having an active SGIM membership is a requirement to apply. We encourage all students and residents who are interested to join SGIM and apply for the scholarship today! Learn more about membership.

Why should I apply?

The National Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship is designed to give students, interns, and residents the opportunity to attend the SGIM annual meeting and allow them to fully experience all that SGIM has to offer. The SGIM annual meeting is a major hub of research, clinical, and educational material that anyone interested in GIM will find to be high quality, broadly applicable, and expertly presented.

How to Apply

To be considered, applicants must provide two brief statements in one combined document (PDF is preferred):

A brief statement (200 words or less) describing your interest in general internal medicine and career goals.
A brief statement (200 words or less) that describes your interest in and plans for the SGIM Annual Meeting. This may include presentations you are giving, sessions covering your areas of interest, networking, etc.) You may refer to the preliminary session listing and identify in your statement those sessions or events you are most interested in attending.

To submit your application, log in to the SGIM awards platform.

Select the National Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship that applies to your level, and click "Start Application."
Answer the required questions & upload the required documents, and click "Next" at the bottom of the screen.
Review your application and click "Save & Finalize."

Applications must be submitted by February 19, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time to be considered. All applicants will be notified before the early registration deadline.

Regional Emerging Leaders Scholarship

The Regional Emerging Leader Scholarship (RELS) program helps medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty step into leadership roles within General Internal Medicine. Recipients typically receive financial support to attend their regional meeting, mentorship from current and former SGIM leaders, and opportunities to network and contribute to regional programming.

RELS is administered separately by each SGIM region, so eligibility, award amounts, and application timelines vary and follow that region's own meeting schedule. Visit your region's page for current details and to apply.
