Membership Types
SGIM membership provides all members with a welcoming and lifelong learning community, a road to professional advancement, and a voice for the future of healthcare. SGIM offers three types of membership: full members, associate members, and emeritus members.

Our Leadership
SGIM's main governance board is the Council, which is comprised of 12 elected and six ad hoc members. The Council oversees the strategic directions of the Society. Each region of SGIM is governed by a slate of elected regional leaders.

Our History
SGIM was founded as the Society for Research and Education in Primary Care Internal Medicine (SREPCIM) in 1978 with the help of a $130,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and an affiliation with the American College of Physicians (ACP). Today, SGIM is an international medical society of 3,300 physicians who are the primary care internal medical faculty of every medical school and major teaching hospital in the United States.
