OVERVIEW: WORKLOAD OF OFFICERS AND COUNCIL MEMBERS OF SGIM

TERM OF OFFICE: All Officers and Council members serve a three-year term.
THE PRESIDENT: The President serves as the principal officer of the society. They oversee monthly Council meetings and monthly meetings of the Executive Committee, which consists of the society's officers. Additionally, the President leads three in-person retreats each year: one in the Spring (just before the annual meeting), and others in December and June, in addition to managing conference calls. With the Council, the President approves editors of JGIM and FORUM, as well as appoints chairs of committees and task forces.
The President also meets by phone weekly with the CEO and Deputy CEO, serves on the ACLGIM Executive Committee and attends calls as needed throughout the year with other allied organizational leadership such as American College of Physicians (ACP), Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM), American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), Family Medicine.
SECRETARY: The Secretary oversees the official communications of the Society. They are responsible for ensuring that minutes are recorded for all meetings of the members and the council, and for making sure that all meeting notices are distributed in accordance with the Bylaws. Additionally, the Secretary chairs the Awards Committee and provides reports to the Council as requested.
The Secretary is a member of the Executive Committee which meets by conference call monthly in addition to the regular monthly Council calls. The Secretary generally serves as a liaison to one other standing committee.
TREASURER: The Treasurer is the volunteer lead for fiscal matters of the Society, collaborating with staff and the Finance Committee to ensure the Council has the necessary information to make informed decisions on financial policies and address issues affecting SGIM.
The Treasurer:
- Chairs the Finance Committee and presents policy recommendations to the Council regarding long-term and short-term investment strategies, financial operations, and relevant policies.
- Participates in developing and reviewing the operational budget, which is approved by the Executive Committee/Council.
- Prepares and presents the SGIM financial report at the annual SGIM business meeting.
- Acts as a secondary signer for checks and other legal documents for the organization.
Executive Committee Meetings: The Executive Committee, consisting of all the officers, meets monthly for one hour by teleconference. These calls are typically operational in nature and are presided over by the President and CEO.
Council Members and Officers: Serve as a liaison to one or more standing committees and task forces. In this role, they are expected to participate in monthly committee conference calls, each lasting one hour.
Council members are also asked to attend their respective regional meetings and provide a brief update on Council activities.
Council Meetings and Retreats:
The Council meets in person three times per year:
- Two retreats, each lasting 3 days and 2 nights, occur in June and December. This may also be held virtually.
- An additional meeting takes place during the annual meeting, lasting up to three hours before the start of the event.
Expenses for the retreats are covered by SGIM, but expenses for the meeting during the annual meeting are not covered. When not meeting in person, the Council holds monthly conference calls for 90 minutes on the first Friday of each month.
