The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) and the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) have filed a lawsuit against the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for halting all grantmaking at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
The lawsuit challenges HHS’s actions, which have eliminated AHRQ’s ability to process research grant applications, delayed decisions on pending applications, and withheld the use of funds that Congress specifically appropriated for healthcare research. As a result, millions of dollars intended to support innovative studies on healthcare delivery have gone unused.
“Research supported by AHRQ is essential to achieving SGIM’s vision for a just health system that brings optimal health for all people,” said Eric B. Bass, MD, MPH, Chief Executive Officer of SGIM. “By halting these funds, HHS has abandoned support for the healthcare research that Congress expected and that the American public needs.”
SGIM and NAPCRG are represented in this case by the Public Citizen Litigation Group. The organizations thank their members for their strong support in building the case.
