Medical education scholarship evolves alongside societal shifts and the changing needs of the communities we serve. In line with this year’s meeting theme, “Individual Voices, Collective Impact,” the 2026 Update in Medical Education highlights scholarship addressing the evolving needs of learning communities — particularly work on advocacy initiatives and the relationships clinician educators build with learners, colleagues, patients, and communities.
Updates in Medical Education is a yearly, well-attended SGIM session offering a review of the past year’s most impactful medical education literature. This year’s update is facilitated by SGIM Education Committee members with expertise in medical education scholarship, and focuses on innovations and insights that general internal medicine educators can apply directly to their own practice.
Presenters conducted a structured review of medical education publications from journals with a track record of publishing work relevant to general internal medicine. Articles moved through a rigorous, team-based selection process: each was initially rated by at least two reviewers, then scored using a modified Delphi technique against criteria including relevance to the meeting theme, applicability to general internal medicine, methodological quality, and impact or generalizability of findings. The highest-rated articles underwent a secondary screening by the full committee using the same scoring system, narrowing the field to a small number of publications that best represent the year’s most important work related to the meeting theme.
Topics may include diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts to mitigate bias and strengthen collaboration in training and care delivery; the learning environment and how educator-learner relationships support trainee growth and professional identity formation; and advocacy work supporting patient care and physician well-being.
Presenters summarize these studies and their key findings from the general internist’s perspective, with attention to the educational contexts in which the findings apply. The interactive format invites attendees to reflect on how they might incorporate takeaways from each article into their own learning environments.
