Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

For 50 years, SGIM has been the professional home for the physicians who coordinate care, innovate the future of medicine, and stay with patients for a lifetime. Proud to be GIM: Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders is SGIM's 50th anniversary campaign, and it asks every member to invest directly in the trainees and early-career physicians who will carry general internal medicine (GIM) forward.

Why This Campaign, Why Now

We are advisors. We are innovators. We are problem-solvers. We are internists.

SGIM launched the #ProudtobeGIM campaign in 2016 to give academic general internists a way to show pride in their field. The campaign succeeded because it named something members already felt but rarely said out loud.

Today, we ask the physicians who feel that pride to put resources behind it. ProudtobeGIM asks established members to make sure the next generation actually gets the chance to choose a rewarding career in GIM through providing scholarships, annual meeting registrations, mentorship, and leadership training.

ProudtobeGIM isn’t just a feeling anymore – it’s a fund.

What Your Gift Funds

Membership Growth

Your gift expands "Investing in GIM" scholarships for fellows and early-career faculty. Membership is often the first door into the SGIM community, and cost shouldn't be what closes it for physicians committed to the field.

Meeting Participation

Your gift increases "National Young Scholar" awards so medical students and residents can attend the SGIM Annual Meeting. For many trainees, the Annual Meeting is the moment GIM stops being a rotation and starts being a career decision.

Program Engagement

Your gift engages more fellows and early-career faculty in SGIM's career-development programming. Early mentorship and skill-building keep talented physicians in academic GIM instead of drifting to other paths.

Our Goal: $500,000 by 2028

Off to a strong start: Launched at SGIM26, Proud to be GIM raised more than $17,000 from 100+ donors in its first four days, with gifts ranging from $5 to $1,500. Most gifts were $100–$499—showing the power of broad member participation.   SGIM’s signature 50th anniversary campaign continues through the celebration, culminating at the 2028 Annual Meeting.
