About UsThe Society of General Internal Medicine was founded in 1978 by a national group of academic general internists committed to promoting research and education aimed at improving healthcare for the whole patient. The organization has grown to nearly 3,000 members over three decades. Drawing upon their expertise and diverse experiences, our members are from the United States and eleven other countries, SGIM members have become leaders in the specialty of internal medicine. The Society is dedicated to insuring that all adults receive high quality health care in the 21st century. The broad expertise of our members in research, education, and clinical practice places SGIM and its members at the forefront of medicine.
Research
SGIM's clinician-investigators are world-renowned researchers who have shaped health care delivery through ground-breaking research in diverse topics sure as quality of care, health care disparities, patient safety, evidence-based medicine, and doctor/patient communication. SGIM's members are experts in clinical, health services, and epidemiological research. These methodologies are essential for transitional research, which guides the integration of medical advances into patient care. Our members also play a major role in educating future generations of researchers to develop, evaluate, and implement health care advances.
Education
SGIM members are also at the forefront of educating medical students, residents, and post-graduate fellows at academic centers and teaching hospitals. Our clinician-educators develop and evaluate innovations in medical education that help prepare tomorrow's clinicians to deliver evidence-based, quality care that is culturally appropriate.
Clinical Practice
Our members specialize in diagnosing and treating the entire spectrum of adults' health conditions with particular expertise in the care of patients with multiple, complex diseases. Members also focus on delivering preventative care to avert or reduce the devastating effects of disease. Our members work to improve the health of adults through the use of information technologies, team-based medical care, systems research, and continuous quality improvement.
