Parenting is a highly rewarding, long-term, and high-stakes commitment. For physicians who are parents, these demands often have a negative effect on career trajectory and prospects for academic promotion. With the advent of COVID, the ability of physician-parents to keep up with clinical responsibilities, research, scholarly endeavors, educational work, and administrative duties became nearly impossible for many individuals. In response, the SGIM Women and Medicine Commission (WAMC) developed a “support for parenting” initiative to help transform our values into action on the issue of support for physician parents. This presentation involves a lively discussion of parenting challenges, solutions, and potential action steps from faculty representing multiple perspectives. Physicians value both their work and their families. It is time to transform our ideals of work-life balance and academic success into action with policy changes that support physicians as parents and caregivers at home.
