Course Description

The goal of AllyTalk is to develop communication skills that interrupt microaggressions.  While there are many passive learning curricula designed to define and identify microaggressions, a gap exists in curriculum that focuses on practicing upstander language for use in the moment.  AllyTalk communication teaching methodology was inspired by palliative medicine training.  In palliative medicine, trainees develop expertise having difficult conversations related to serious illness by practicing the language in a safe setting, utlizing roleplay with the ability to stop and restart the conversation to try different approaches.  Ally Talk uses a similar method of practicing upstander language in repetition to develop “muscle memory.”

This content will introduce these communication skills to you, as a learner, as well as give you information and tips for how to teach this training in your institution.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify microaggressions in the healthcare setting
  • Employ specific language for “The 6 D’s” that can be used to intervene when witnessing microagressions
  • Practice utilizing “The 6 D” strategies through role play scenerios.
