Clinical Updates in Addiction Medicine

Nearly 48.7 million Americans had a substance use disorder (SUD) diagnosis in the past year, per the most recent National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2022), and 2024 alone saw an estimated 80,000 overdose deaths in the U.S. Yet fewer than 1 in 4 people with SUD received any addiction treatment in the past year. General internists are positioned to make a real difference by staying current on SUD care.
This session critically reviews high-yield, peer-reviewed literature from the past year to guide internists caring for patients with SUD, with particular attention to what’s relevant for academic general internists shaping clinical education and advocacy. Content spans medication and behavioral treatment for SUD, managing co-occurring medical conditions, models for integrating SUD care into generalist settings, health policy implications, and disparities in SUD screening and treatment.
Presenters use a case-based approach to highlight clinical implications and keep the audience engaged, summarizing key findings into practical strategies internists can put to use in general practice when caring for individuals with SUD.
