This Clinical Update in Young Adult Health was originally delivered on May 11, 2023 at the SGIM23 Annual Meeting in Denver.
Although many physicians think of young adults as typically healthy, this is a population that often experiences health disparities and receives inadequate medical care for their needs, as reported by the Institute of Medicine. Health during pediatric ages can impact health throughout adulthood. Additionally, the IOM reported that “the dominant patter among young adults today is declining health” and that “the majority of young adults health problems are preventable.” (Institute of Medicine and National Research Council: Investing in the Health and Well-Being of Young Adults, 2015) With higher rates of morbidity and mortality from trauma, homicide, mental health problems, substance use, and high-risk sexual behavior than other age rantes, suggest internists should be more aware of current needs of and opportunities to bridge the care gaps that exists for young adults.
Presenters share papers published in the previous 12 months that significantly impact young adult health and illustrate some of the health disparities faced by this population. Presenters review each paper and discuss practice-changing information that is relevant to the general internist, including inpatient and outpatient care settings.
