Course Description

Primary Care Physicians are uniquely suited to address overweight and obesity to improve overall health and multiple associated chronic medical conditions.  This course will provide practical and effective strategies to incorporate weight management into a primary care practice.

Obesity is not only one of the most common chronic conditions impacting patients in the primary care setting, it is also one of the most undertreated.  Physicians, the general public, and even patients themselves continue to stigmatize obesity as a lifestyle choice and a character flaw rather than a chronic condition with biopsychosocial contributors.  In addition, many of the diseases we manage in the primary care setting are associated with, aggravated by, or caused by obesity.  When we manage and ameliorate unhealthy weight, we also improve our patients’ overall health.

This course will discuss evaluating patients, tips for diet and lifestyle interventions, prescribing medications, and billing and reimbursement.  We will demonstrate that the skills involved in weight management, such as evaluating patients, counseling, prescribing diet and lifestyle changes, and prescribing long-term obesity medications are within the realm of a PCP’s expertise.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate a patient with unhealthy weight using history, physical exam, and cost-effective investigations
  • Construct a weight management plan incorporating lifestyle intervention (diet, exercise, behavioral interventions)
  • Prescribe anti-obesity medications when appropriate and understand how to minimize medication-related weight gain.
