SGIM Regional
Emerging Leader Scholarship

Eligible applicants include:

• Medical students
• Residents and fellows
• Junior faculty within five years of completing residency or fellowship training, whichever is later

Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in General Internal Medicine, leadership development, and future involvement with SGIM and the Mid-Atlantic region.

You do not need to be presenting at the regional meeting to apply.

SGIM Membership

• Junior faculty applicants must have an active SGIM membership at the time of application.
• Medical student and resident/fellow applicants are strongly encouraged to be SGIM members. Trainee recipients who are not already members will be expected to join SGIM before receiving the award.

The Regional Emerging Leader Scholarship is designed to help emerging leaders:

• Build connections with SGIM peers and regional leaders
• Learn more about leadership opportunities in academic general internal medicine
• Network with peers and mentors across the Mid-Atlantic region
• Explore innovative work in research, education, advocacy, and clinical care

SGIM regional meetings bring together clinicians, educators, researchers, and trainees who are committed to advancing General Internal Medicine and fostering professional growth.

Recipients are expected to:

• Attend the current year's SGIM regional meeting.
• Participate in assigned leadership or engagement activities during the meeting.
• Connect with their assigned mentor before and/or during the meeting.
• Remain involved with regional SGIM activities, and future regional meetings, whenever possible.

Scholarship funds will be distributed in person at the regional meeting.

Each recipient will be paired with a current or former SGIM regional leader for mentorship and professional development.

Depending on their level of training and experience, recipients may also have the opportunity to:

• Judge oral abstract, poster, medical jeopardy, or teaching competitions
• Co-moderate a session with an experienced SGIM leader
• Serve on the planning committee for a future Mid-Atlantic SGIM Regional Meeting

Applications are due by Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET.

Applications will be reviewed based on:

• Demonstrated interest in General Internal Medicine
• Leadership potential and prior leadership experiences
• Interest in regions SGIM involvement
• New ideas or contributions to the region
• Anticipated benefit from participation in the regional meeting.

Applicants will be notified before the early registration deadline for the regional meeting.

   • Your career goals and leadership interests
   • Previous leadership experiences
   • Your interest in SGIM and regional leadership opportunities
   • What you hope to gain from attending the Mid-Atlantic SGIM Regional Meeting
   • Any planned presentations, networking goals, sessions of interest, or new ideas you hope to explore
