Overview
Dataset Summary
The Medical Student Matriculating Questionnaire (MSQ) and Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) are national surveys administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). These surveys capture U.S. medical studentsโ demographics, educational experiences, wellness, debt burden, specialty preferences, and career plans at two key time points: entry into medical school (MSQ) and at graduation (GQ).
These datasets are widely used in medical education research and institutional benchmarking to assess trends in student experiences, workforce intentions, and educational outcomes.
Caveats
- Access to raw, individual-level data is restricted and requires AAMC approval and a Data Use Agreement (DUA).
- Survey participation is voluntary, which may introduce response bias.
- Data are cross-sectional at each time point and do not follow individuals longitudinally through training.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Student demographics
- Educational debt
- Specialty choice
- Educational satisfaction
- Experiences of mistreatment
- Readiness for residency
- Career intentions
