Biography

“She has held nearly every role in academic medicine — division chief, associate dean, deputy journal editor, extramurally-funded researcher — and left to build something entirely new.”

Dr. Leykum’s career is a masterclass in identifying and pursuing a scholarly niche — and then following it wherever it leads. Her joint MD/MBA from Columbia, NIH and VA funding, editorial roles at three major journals, and service on a National Academies committee represent the outer edge of what an academic hospitalist career can become. But what makes her uniquely valuable to this program is her willingness to walk away from traditional academic structures to become part of the inaugural leadership team at  Harbor Health, a new care delivery organization in Austin. She understands the business of healthcare from both the inside of major academic medical centers and the vantage point of building something from scratch. For attendees navigating their own career inflection points — or wondering what joyful, purposeful practice might look like — Dr. Leykum is an essential voice.
