The number of older adults (age 65 and over) in the U.S. is expected to grow to 82 million by 2050. With a geriatrics workforce of only about 8000 practicing geriatricians nationally, the majority of care of older adults is provided by general internists in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Providing up-to-date, excellent care to older adults is therefore of greater importance to most general internists.
The Update in Geriatric Medicine will review advances in the clinical care of older adults published in the prior year. The presenters will share high-quality, practice-changing articles published in 2025 on topics such as the diagnosis and management of geriatric syndromes (e.g., dementia, frailty, falls), management of multimorbidity, and navigating systems of care. We will also include trials focused on older adults or with a substantial portion of older adult participants. We will discuss the strength of the evidence; contextualize each study within the Geriatrics 5M’s framework of Multicomplexity, Mind, Mobility, Medications, and what Matters Most; and summarize each article’s takeaway and applicability to clinical practice.
