The Membership Committee supports the mission of SGIM by cultivating a healthy membership by recruiting and retaining a diverse, inclusive, and active membership of educators, researchers, and clinicians in academic general internal medicine in the United States and around the world. The Membership Committee identifies and measures members' needs, priorities, satisfaction with the Society, viewpoints, and works with other leaders to develop and implement plans accordingly; collaborates with Council and other work groups to devise strategies for attracting and retaining members.
2022-2023 Membership Committee Initiatives:
- Membership Recruitment & Retention: Collaborates with the SGIM membership staff to prioritize retain SGIM's current membership to ensure organizational health in the future. New membership retention efforts will include targeted outreach to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), Association of Chiefs & Leaders of General Internal Medicine (ACLGIM) and other senior members. Standard retention efforts include the Calendar of Events for both regional and national events, career development programs and other member benefits. Works collaboratively with the Regional Membership Leaders to reach prospective members and networks at institutions not fully represented within SGIM.
- Trainee Engagement Programs: Helps facilitate exposure and engagement with SGIM at an early stage in a trainee's career. The Committee manages the National Young Scholars in GIM Scholarship, which provides a complimentary registration to the SGIM annual meeting to students and/or residents (application process). The Commitee also manages the Investing in GIM Membership Program, which provides a complimentary membership to first-year fellows (first come, first served).
- Engagement with Regional Membership Leadership: Manages subcommittee of Regional Membership Chairs and Chair-Elects from reach of the 7 regions and hosts quarterly conference calls led by the
Membership Committee Co-Chair. These calls serve as an opportunity
for collaboration among the regions, build relationships, discuss upcoming regional meetings and allow the Membership Committee Co-Chair to develop a roster of colleagues for the upcoming leadership term.
