Southern Award Nominations

The Advocacy and Community Service Award is designed to honor members of the SGIM of the Southern Region who have notably contributed to enhancing the health of their community through advocacy and/or community service. This award can be conferred for a variety of achievements, including:

1. Advocacy efforts that have led to improved access to or quality of care for underserved populations.
2. Leadership or establishment of community-based programs.
3. Development of volunteer or advocacy opportunities for others.
4. Promotion of the growth of a community-based program or organization.
5. Significant personal, volunteer, or advocacy contributions within the community or to a community-based organization.
6. Demonstrated long-term commitment to serving a community-based organization.

The Southern Society of General Internal Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical Education is designed to recognize exceptional Clinician Educators in our region. This award targets individuals who are in the process of advancing their careers as Clinician Educators. The Committee will specifically seek candidates who meet the following criteria:

1. Are in the early or mid-stages of their career as Clinician Educators, holding a position at or below the rank of Assistant Professor.
2. Are actively involved with the SGIM at the regional level.
3. Have demonstrated innovation and excellence in teaching and/or in clinical care delivery.

The Society of General Internal Medicine invites nominations to honor mid-level and senior members of Regional SGIM for their significant contributions to SGIM and their role in advancing generalism. This award aims to acknowledge the achievements of mid-level and senior-level SGIM members and encourage their ongoing engagement and contributions to the regional SGIM. Awardees will be honored at the regional SGIM meeting.

Eligibility for the Award for Leadership: This award targets current SGIM members who have been active in regional SGIM for at least 8-10 years, though there is no strict minimum membership duration. Eligible candidates include researchers, educators, clinicians, and administrators.

Criteria for Selection: Nominees should ideally meet the following criteria:

1. Significant contributions to the mission of SGIM.
2. Work that is acknowledged for advancing academic general internal medicine.
3. Active involvement and support in SGIM regional activities.

Suitable examples of nominees include individuals recognized as role models and educators in their institutions, those in prominent leadership or administrative roles, researchers contributing to the advancement of generalism, and individuals who have shown leadership in academic pursuits or organizations that bolster academic general internal medicine.

We are pleased to announce the Call for Applications for the Annual Southern SGIM Leadership Development Award. This award aims to support early career faculty in enhancing their leadership skills and fostering a deeper connection with Southern SGIM. Awardees are expected to attend and actively participate in the Southern SGIM Regional Meeting. Participation will vary according to each awardee’s interests and strengths and may involve activities like session moderation, vignette judging, and mentoring. Additionally, awardees will gain further leadership development opportunities by serving on the planning committee for the 2024 Southern SGIM meeting.

Eligibility Criteria:

1. Must be a current SGIM member.
2. Active involvement in Southern SGIM, evidenced by attendance or presentation at the regional meeting at least once in the past five years.
3. Interest in escalating involvement in SGIM regional leadership, without prior experience in an SGIM leadership role.
4. Typically, awardees will be current faculty at or below the Assistant Professor level. However, mid-career faculty who are newly active in Southern SGIM are also encouraged to apply.

Please note, all nominees must be SGIM members. Self-nominations by eligible individuals are welcome.

The purpose of this award is to recognize an SGIM member from each region who has shown a commitment to advocacy and efforts towards improving DEI in academic general internal medicine. This includes recognition of those who have devoted time and energy toward increasing awareness of injustices against historically marginalized groups of people, such as underrepresented minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and those from different cultural backgrounds, and advocated for changes within academic medicine or society at large.

This award can be conferred for a variety of achievements, including:

1. Advocacy efforts and actions to support the advancement of underrepresented minorities or those from disadvantaged backgrounds in academic medicine, particularly in GIM
2. Advocacy efforts and actions taken toward reducing health disparities in the awardee’s community, whether it’s at the institutional, city, state, or national level.
3. Mentorship to help guide student learners, residents, fellows, and junior faculty from underrepresented backgrounds that advanced their professionalism and training in academic medicine
4. Actions taken or areas with leadership to increase social accountability and ethical medical care and decrease health disparities through the education and expanded understanding of diverse and underrepresented populations, including patients, physicians, healthcare professionals, residents, students, and the public.

Criteria for Selection:

• Must be an active member of SGIM at the regional level
• Nominee’s CV
• Formal nomination letter of two pages or less, expanding on the nominee’s CV, specifically success in DEI work, and detailing their qualifications
