Overview
Dataset Summary
The U.S. Census Bureau Data Portal provides access to extensive population-based data on U.S. sociodemographic characteristics, including age, sex, race and ethnicity, income, education, employment, and housing.
Data are available at multiple geographic levels, including national, state, county, census tract, census block group, and census block. The portal includes decennial census data as well as numerous ongoing surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, most notably the American Community Survey (ACS), which is widely used for annual population and socioeconomic estimates.
Caveats
- Data for narrowly defined geographic areas (e.g., census tract, block group, block) may require additional data extraction and processing.
- Survey-based estimates (e.g., ACS) include sampling error and should be interpreted with margins of error.
- Changes in survey design or question wording over time may affect trend analyses.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Median household income by U.S. county
- Age distribution of the population by sex and race/ethnicity
- Educational attainment and employment rates
- Housing characteristics and neighborhood-level socioeconomic indicators
