Dataset Summary

The Long-Term Care Focus (LTCFocus) project, developed by researchers at Brown University, aggregates data from Medicare and Medicaid claims, nursing home assessments, and home health agency assessments to create downloadable, facility- and state-level datasets.

The data support research on long-term care nursing home residents and home care patients and can be used to evaluate state policies, local long-term care markets, facility or agency characteristics, and quality of care at the facility or state level. LTCFocus is widely used for health services and policy research in aging and long-term care.

Caveats
  • Data are aggregated at the facility or state level and do not include individual-level records.
  • To protect confidentiality, cells with fewer than 10 observations are suppressed, which can result in substantial missingness for some variables.
  • Limited ability to examine rare outcomes due to data suppression.
  • Researchers must carefully account for aggregation when conducting statistical analyses.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
  • Facility-level quality indicators
  • State variation in long-term care policies
  • Nursing home and home health agency characteristics
  • Market characteristics of long-term care services
  • Aggregated care quality at the facility or state level
