Overview
Dataset Summary
The HCUP Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) is part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and contains administrative data on hospital readmissions from a nationally representative sample of states for a single year. The NRD enables researchers to track patients across hospitals within a state during a calendar year, supporting analyses of national readmission rates, patterns, costs, and diagnoses.
Caveats
- Data are released annually and are limited to readmissions occurring within the same calendar year.
- Patients cannot be tracked across state lines or across years.
- As an administrative dataset, analyses depend on accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures.
- Access requires purchase and adherence to HCUP data use agreements.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Inpatient readmission costs
- Prevalence of readmission diagnoses
- 30-day and condition-specific readmission rates
