Overview
Dataset Summary
The HCUP Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) is part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and is the largest all-payer emergency department (ED) database in the United States. NEDS contains administrative data on all non-federal hospital-based ED visits from a nationally representative sample of states for a single year. The dataset supports national estimates of ED utilization, diagnoses, procedures, charges, and outcomes.
Caveats
- Data are released annually and are cross-sectional by year.
- As an administrative dataset, analyses depend on accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures.
- Some years do not include race/ethnicity data.
- Patients cannot be consistently tracked across years.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Emergency department costs
- Prevalence of ED diagnoses
- Utilization patterns by payer or demographic group
