Overview
Dataset Summary
The HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) are part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and contain administrative data on all non-federal hospital discharges within participating states for a single year. Data are available for multiple states and years. In some states, a βrevisitβ variable allows tracking of readmissions within a calendar year, enabling longitudinal analyses at the patient level within that state and year.
Caveats
- Each new use of state HCUP data requires separate approval.
- Availability of revisit variables and linkage capabilities varies by state.
- As an administrative dataset, analyses depend on accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Inpatient costs
- Prevalence of admission diagnoses
- Readmission rates
