Dataset Summary

The HCUP State Inpatient Databases (SID) are part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and contain administrative data on all non-federal hospital discharges within participating states for a single year. Data are available for multiple states and years. In some states, a β€œrevisit” variable allows tracking of readmissions within a calendar year, enabling longitudinal analyses at the patient level within that state and year.

Caveats
  • Each new use of state HCUP data requires separate approval.
  • Availability of revisit variables and linkage capabilities varies by state.
  • As an administrative dataset, analyses depend on accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
  • Inpatient costs
  • Prevalence of admission diagnoses
  • Readmission rates
