Overview
Dataset Summary
The HCUP Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) is part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and is the largest publicly available all-payer inpatient healthcare database in the United States. The NIS contains administrative data on all non-federal hospital discharges from a nationally representative sample of states for a given year. It is widely used for analyses of inpatient utilization, costs, diagnoses, procedures, and outcomes at the national level.
Caveats
- Patients cannot be tracked across admissions or readmissions within the NIS.
- As an administrative dataset, analyses depend on accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures.
- Data are cross-sectional by year and do not include detailed clinical variables beyond what is coded for billing purposes.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Inpatient costs
- Prevalence of admission diagnoses
- Readmission rates (at the hospital or population level)
