Dataset Summary

The Cosmos platform is a very large electronic health record (EHR) dataset composed of data contributed by hospitals and healthcare systems in the United States and internationally that use the Epic EHR and participate in Cosmos.

The dataset includes diverse patient populations across multiple care settings, including inpatient and outpatient encounters. Cosmos provides near–real time data (with an approximate 2–4 week lag) and supports analyses conducted directly within the secure Cosmos platform. Users cannot export row-level data; all analyses must be performed within the system.

Caveats
  • Accessible only to individuals affiliated with contributing institutions.
  • All analyses must be conducted within the Cosmos platform; external raw data extraction is not permitted.
  • Data reflect only participating Epic institutions.
  • Near–real time data include a 2–4 week lag.
  • Institution-dependent costs or licensing fees may apply.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
  • Number of admissions for specific diseases
  • Vaccination rates
  • Screening test utilization
  • Healthcare utilization patterns across care settings
  • Trends in diagnoses and procedures over time
