The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is a large, state-based telephone survey that collects data on health-related behaviors, chronic conditions, preventive services, and social determinants among U.S. adults. It is commonly used for population health surveillance, state- and local-level analyses, and to examine geographic variation in health behaviors and outcomes.
Caveats
- Self-reported data are subject to recall and social desirability bias
- Complex survey design requires appropriate weighting for valid inference
- Not all states include optional modules in every year
