Overview
Dataset Summary
The ACHIEVE Trial is a multicenter randomized controlled trial of 977 community-dwelling older adults (ages 70β84) with untreated hearing loss. The study evaluates whether a hearing intervention reduces cognitive decline and influences brain structure, mental health, and physical health outcomes.
Participants were randomized to a hearing intervention or control condition and followed longitudinally with detailed cognitive testing, health assessments, and imaging in a subset of participants. The trial provides high-quality experimental data to examine the relationship between hearing loss treatment and cognitive and functional aging outcomes.
Caveats
- Access to individual participant data (IPD) requires submission of a formal data request, Data Use Agreement (DUA), and a strong research proposal.
- As an RCT, the sample size is smaller than large administrative or registry datasets.
- Generalizability may be limited to older adults with untreated hearing loss who met study eligibility criteria.
- Use of imaging or biomarker data may require additional approvals or expertise.
Examples of Outcomes Examined
- Cognitive decline and incident dementia
- Brain structure and neuroimaging markers
- Mental health outcomes
- Physical function and mobility
- Healthcare utilization
