Honoring Excellence in General Internal Medicine
Each year, SGIM honors members who have made outstanding contributions to general internal medicine through research, education, advocacy, mentorship, innovation, and leadership. The following individuals and teams have been selected as recipients of SGIM’s highest honors and competitive grants for 2025, recognizing their work and impact during 2024.

Robert J. Glaser Award
Jean Kutner MD, MSPH
The Robert J. Glaser Award recognizes outstanding contributions to research, education, leadership, and mentoring in generalism in medicine and is presented at the SGIM Annual Meeting as a plenary session feature. This award is supported by grants from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, the Commonwealth Fund, and many individual contributions.

Frederick L. Brancati Mentorship and Leadership Award
Mim Ari, MD
This award honors an individual at the junior faculty level who inspires and mentors trainees to pursue general internal medicine and lead the transformation of health care through innovations in research, education, and practice.

Herbert W. Nickens Award
Valerie Stone, MD, MPH
The Herbert W. Nickens Award recognizes exceptional commitment to cultural diversity in medicine. The award will honor an individual or representative of an organization who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to cultural diversity in medicine or to improving minority health.

John M. Eisenberg Award for Career Achievement in Research
Amy Justice, MD, PhD
The John M. Eisenberg National Award for Career Achievement in Research recognizes SGIM members whose lifetime research contributions have had a national impact.

David R. Calkins Award in Health Policy Advocacy
Anders Chen, MD, MHS
This award recognizes the extraordinary commitment that many members make when they choose to advocate on behalf of SGIM. It is named for the late David R. Calkins, MD, because of his tireless advocacy in health policy issues on behalf of SGIM since its inception as SREPCIM in 1978.

Achievement in Education and Innovation Award
Monica Lypson, MD, MHPE
This award recognizes gifted teachers who have demonstrated a track record of employing innovative teaching methods, developing outstanding courses and curricula, or novel educational programs shared at a national level.

Excellence in Medical Ethics Award
Neil Wenger, MD
This award recognizes the original scholarship that SGIM members have done to advance medical ethics. It promotes and rewards outstanding contributions to the field of medical ethics, including not only traditional scholarship such as publication of research but also viewpoint articles, educational materials, popular writing, oral presentations, and efforts to influence health policy.

Outstanding Junior Investigator of the Year Award
Lisa Rotenstein, MBA, MD
This award recognizes SGIM junior investigator members whose academic ranks do not exceed Assistant Professor and whose early career achievements and overall bodies of work to date have had a national impact on generalist research.

Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award
Renuka Tipirneni, MD, MSc
This award recognizes outstanding SGIM members at the Associate Professor level or within 15 years of their initial faculty appointment who demonstrate exemplary mentorship and advocacy for junior investigators in general medicine research.

Mid-Career Education Mentorship Award
Anne Cioletti, MD
This award honors exceptional SGIM members who have shown exemplary mentorship, teaching, and leadership in general internal medicine, focusing on the professional development of junior and peer clinician educators.

Best Published Research Paper of the Year Award
Jeffrey Kullgren, MD, MPH, MS
This award celebrates SGIM members who have authored papers with outstanding contributions to general internal medicine research in the preceding year.

Scholarship in Medical Education Award
Amy Farkas, MD, MS
This award honors SGIM members for their original work to improve medical education on a national level.

Quality and Practice Innovation Award
Jennifer Cluett and the Healthcare Associates Hypertension Multidisciplinary Clinic Team – Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
This award recognizes leaders of practice innovations in outpatient (primary care) OR inpatient settings who have improved care within the “quality” domains of safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equality.

Lawrence S. Linn Grant
Marc Shi, BA, MD, MSc
The Lawrence S. Linn Research Grant provides funding to young investigators focused on studying or enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with AIDS or HIV infection.

Mary O'Flaherty Horn Grant
Amrapali Maitra, MD, PhD
Mary O’Flaherty Horn Scholars in General Internal Medicine Program is a two-year career development grant awarded to an outstanding junior medical school faculty member in general internal medicine.

Founders' Grant
Natalie Cameron, BA, MD
The Founders’ Grant offers funding to support research by a junior investigator.

ACLGIM Chief's Recognition Award
Katherine Bensching, MD
The ACLGIM Chief’s Recognition Award recognizes a GIM Division Chief who most represents excellence in division leadership.

ACLGIM Leadership Award
Jennifer Schmidt, MD
The ACLGIM Leadership Award recognizes new faculty appointees who have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills in various areas of academic medicine, including clinical, educational, research, or administrative efforts.

ACLGIM UNLTD (Unified Leadership Training for Diversity Program)
Maylyn Martinez, MD, MSc, and Desiree Burroughs-Ray, MD
Recognizing that academic leaders are expected to navigate complex structures and systems; the Unified Leadership Training for Diversity (UNLTD) Program aims to equip current and aspiring academic leaders with the essential skills to thrive and drive diversity in academic organizations.
