Society of General Internal Medicine Privacy Policy

The Society of General Internal Medicine is committed to protecting the privacy of its members and customers. This document describes the information we collect from our web sites and digital products and how we use it.

The SGIM website includes microsites for www.sgim.org, www.aclgim.org, www.jgim.org, www.ProudtobeGIM.org, the annual meeting website, and GIM Connect. The privacy policy set forth on this page is inclusive of all SGIM websites and mobile apps.

Information collected when you visit SGIM websites or digital products
When you view pages and graphics on our web sites, the following information is recorded in a log file:

● The time and date of your request
● The internet address of your computer
● The browser and operating system you are using
● The page which you are viewing
● The previous page that you visited (the referrer)

A "cookie" is a small data text file that is placed in your browser and allows us to recognize you each time you visit this site (personalization, etc.). Cookies themselves do not contain any personal information, and we do not use cookies to collect personal information. Cookies may also be used by 3rd party content providers such as newsfeeds.

SGIM websites use tracking tools for various purposes such as evaluating usage of the sites or to advertise on third party websites (including Google) to previous visitors of these sites. Such services can include displaying messages and links to previous visitors who haven't completed a task on our site, for example: using the contact form to make an inquiry. This could be in the form of an advertisement on the Google search results page, another site in the Google Display Network, or other third-party sites. Third-party vendors use cookies to serve ads based on users' past visits to SGIM.org, JGIM.org and other SGIM sites. Any data collected will be used in accordance with our own privacy policy and Google's privacy policy. To opt out of this feature, visit http://optout.networkadvertising.org.

How do we use your information?
Any of the information we collect from you may be used in one of the following ways:

1. To personalize your experience (your information helps us to better respond to your individual needs)
2. To improve our website (we continually strive to improve our website offerings based on the information and feedback we receive from you)
3. To improve customer service (your information helps us to more effectively respond to your customer service requests and support needs)
4. To send periodic emails - The email address you provide may be used to send you information, respond to inquiries, and/or other requests or questions.

How do we protect your information?
We implement a variety of security measures to maintain the safety of your personal information when you enter, submit, or access your personal information.

All supplied sensitive/credit information is transmitted via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology and then encrypted into our payment gateway providers database only to be accessible by those authorized with special access rights to such systems. These users are required to keep the information confidential.

Do we disclose any information to outside parties?
SGIM maintains a membership database independent of its web operations. The information in this database is drawn from membership applications, dues payment forms, event registrations and other transactions between the Society and its members. Using this database, the Society occasionally shares our printed mailing list (name, title, institution, mailing address) with a small number of carefully selected outside parties so long as those parties agree to keep this information confidential. We never share member emails with outside third parties. This does not include trusted third parties who assist us in operating our website, conducting our business, or servicing you. We may also release your information when we believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce our site policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property, or safety. You may instruct the Society not to share your personal information by contacting us at the addresses listed below.

EU Data Subjects
Scope. This section applies if you are an individual located in the European Union (“EU”) (“EU Data Subject”). For these purposes, reference to the EU also includes the European Economic Area countries of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway and, where applicable, Switzerland.

Data Controller. The Society of General Internal Medicine is the data controller for the processing of your Personal Data.

Your Rights. A new European law, called the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) gives certain rights to individuals in relation to their personal data. Accordingly, we have implemented additional transparency and access controls in our Privacy Policy to help users take advantage of those rights. As available and except as limited under applicable law, the rights afforded to individuals are:

  • Right of access: If you ask us, we will confirm whether we are processing your Personal Data and, if so, provide you with a copy of that Personal Data (along with certain other details). If you require additional copies, we may need to charge a reasonable fee.
  • ight to rectification: If your Personal Data is inaccurate or incomplete, you are entitled to have it rectified or completed. If we have shared your Personal Data with others, we will tell them about the rectification where possible. If you ask us, where possible and lawful to do so, we will also tell you with whom we shared your Personal Data so that you can contact them directly.
  • Right to erasure: You may ask us to delete or remove your Personal Data and we will do so in some circumstances, such as where we no longer need it (we may not delete your data when other interests outweigh your right to deletion). If we have shared your data with others, we will tell them about the erasure where possible. If you ask us, where possible and lawful to do so, we will also tell you with whom we shared your Personal Data so that you can contact them directly.
  • Right to restrict processing: You may ask us to restrict or ‘block’ the processing of your Personal Data in certain circumstances, such as where you contest the accuracy of that Personal Data or object to us processing it. We will tell you before we lift any restriction on processing. If we have shared your Personal Data with others, we will tell them about the restriction where possible. If you ask us, where possible and lawful to do so, we will also tell you with whom we shared your Personal Data so that you can contact them directly.
  • Right to data portability: Effective 25 May 2018, you have the right to obtain your Personal Data from us that you consented to give us or that is necessary to perform a contract with you. We will give you your Personal Data in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format. You may reuse it elsewhere.
  • Right to object: You may ask us at any time to stop processing your Personal Data, and we will do so:
o If we are relying on a legitimate interest to process your Personal Data — unless we demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing; or
o If we are processing your Personal Data for direct marketing.
  • Rights in relation to automated decision-making and profiling: You have the right to be free from decisions based solely on automated processing of your Personal Data, including profiling, that affect you, unless such processing is necessary for entering into, or the performance of, a contract between you and us or you provide your explicit consent to such processing.
  • Right to withdraw consent: If we rely on your consent to process your Personal Data, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. This will not affect the lawfulness of processing based on your prior consent.
  • Right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority: If you have a concern about our privacy practices, including the way we have handled your Personal Data, you can report it to the data protection authority that is authorized to hear those concerns.

You may exercise your rights by contacting us as indicated under “Contact Us” section below.

Legitimate Interest. “Legitimate interests” means the interests of The Society of General Internal Medicine in conducting and managing our organization. For example, we have a legitimate interest in processing your Personal Data to analyze how the websites, apps and our products and services are being used by you, and to ensure network and information security, as described in this Privacy Policy. When we process your Personal Data for our legitimate interests, we make sure to consider and balance any potential impact on you, and your rights under data protection laws. Our legitimate interests do not automatically override your interests. We will not use your Personal Data for activities where our interests are overridden by the impact on you, unless we have your consent or those activities are otherwise required or permitted to by law. You have the right to object to processing that is based on our legitimate interests. For more information on your rights, please see “Your Rights” section above.
