Biography
Brian Kwan, MD, SFHM, FACP, is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He completed his undergraduate and medical training at Northwestern University before relocating to San Diego for Internal Medicine residency.
Dr. Kwan is an academic hospitalist at the Jennifer Moreno Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Diego. Additionally, he serves as the co-director of the 3rd-year Internal Medicine Clerkship at UCSD and is core faculty of the UCSD Internal Medicine Residency Program as the associate director for the Residency as Clinician Educators (RACE) Track.
Dr. Kwan’s research interests include curriculum development (using innovative and active learning modalities), improving the pipeline for trainees pursuing careers in internal and hospital medicine, transitioning learners across the medical education continuum, and faculty/professional development.
Dr. Kwan prides himself on his contributions and leadership across multiple professional organizations. He is the past Chair of the Physicians-in-Training Committee and the current Chair of the inaugural Fellowship (formerly Membership) Committee at the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM). He is the current President-Elect of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM) and serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM). He is the past Lead Hospitalist Consultant of VISN 22 as a member of the national VA Hospital Medicine Field Advisory Board and serves on the regional American College of Physicians (ACP) Governor’s Council as the co-Chair of the Medical Education Committee for Southern California Region 3.
