Mountain West Call for Awards Nominations

​The Society for General Internal Medicine has developed rigorous criteria that recognize outstanding clinical educators, researchers, advocacy & community service, and leaders. These criteria go beyond those traditionally used for identifying those with excellence in research criteria, such as peer‐reviewed publications or grant support.

Award for Excellence in Clinician Education

The Mountain West Society of General Internal Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical Education is intended to highlight outstanding Clinician Educators in our region. The award is given to individuals who are working towards developing their careers as Clinician Educators. Specifically, the Committee will look for individuals who:

• Are early or mid-career Clinician Educators (at or below the rank of Assistant Professor)
• Are active members of SGIM at the regional level
• Have displayed innovation and excellence in teaching and/or in the delivery of clinical care

Award for Excellence in Clinician Investigation

The Mountain West Society of General Internal Medicine Award for Excellence in Clinical Investigation is intended to highlight outstanding Clinician Investigators in our region. The award is applicable to individuals who are working towards developing their careers as Clinician Investigators. Specifically, the Committee will look for individuals who:

• Are early or mid-career Clinician Investigators (at or below the rank of Assistant Professor)
• Are active members of SGIM at the regional level
• Have displayed innovation and excellence in research and/or policy development

Advocacy and Community Service Award 

Recognizes those who have made significant contributions to improve the health of their community through advocacy and/or community service: Advocacy leading to increased access or quality care for underserved populations.

1. Leading or creating community‐based programs
2. Creating volunteer or advocacy opportunities for others
3. Fostering the growth of a community‐based program/organization
4. Having made significant personal/volunteer/advocacy contributions in the community or community‐based organization
5. Demonstrating a history of service to a community-based organization

Leader in General Internal Medicine (LGIM) Award

This award is intended for current SGIM members who have been active members of regional SGIM for at least 8 – 10 years. However, a minimum number of years as an SGIM member are not required. Researchers, educators, clinicians, and administrators are all eligible.

Awards will be made to nominees who best meet the following criteria:

• Have contributed to the mission of SGIM
• Work is recognized as advancing academic general internal medicine
• Active supporter and participant in SGIM regional activities

Examples include individuals recognized as role models and educators at their institutions, individuals with significant leadership or administrative roles at their institutions, researchers whose work has advanced generalism, and individuals with demonstrated leadership in other academic endeavors or organizations that enhance academic general internal medicine.

All nominees must be members of SGIM.

Eligible individuals are welcome to nominate themselves.

The application consists of the following items:

• CV
• Letter of nomination from an SGIM member that includes reason for nomination and how they meet the award criteria
• Letter from division chief (who need not be an SGIM member)
