Insights and Future Directions from the SGIM AI Position Statement
Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2025 Annual Meeting in Florida.

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT are powerful new technologies that have advanced substantially in the last two years and are already being deployed in healthcare settings.  It is widely expected that generative AI tools will grow in sophistication and be used more broadly within medicine for diverse purposes ranging from simple administrative tasks to complex diagnosis and treatment.  In this symposium, authors of the SGIM AI position statement will provide an update on the current state of generative AI toolks in medicine and review the specific recommendations made in the position statement, providing deeper context on the underlying rationale and implications for general internists.  Presenters review expected benefits and potential harms of these technology, with a specific focus on ethics and equity considerations.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the recommendations presented in the SGIM AI position statement and their underlying rationale
  • Examine the potential benefits and harms of generative AI for healthcare applications, especially in terms of ethics and health equity
