Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2025 Annual Meeting in Florida.

Trauma is ubiquitous and can occur at the individual, interpersonal, community, social and historical levels, spanning from child abuse and neglect, sexual assault, military and war trauma, natural disasters, to toxic stresses such as heterosexism and the vicarious trauma of providing care for suffering individuals as well as historical and community traumas stemming from racism. These adverse exposures can have profound effects on attachment, learning, development, mood, inflammation, and immunity, which can drive maladaptive coping, leading to adverse medical conditions, and often, if unbuffered, result in premature death.  Caregiving relational strategies can mitigate these effects and help individuals to heal. This symposium will define Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and offer strategies for implementing TIC through the lens of somatic therapies, communication about adversity, use of anti-racist praxis, and reproductive health exams in refugee patients.

Learning Objectives
  1. Discuss the connection between trauma exposure and poor health and strategies to mitigate these effects
  2. Examine skills in communication about somatic therapies and the use of metaphors to explain how trauma affects health, and strategies that can engage patients in your care
  3. Discuss trauma-informed communication and sensitive examination techniques that can be employed with refugee, immigrant and migrant patients
