Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2025 Annual Meeting in Florida.

Political polarization continues to escalate in the United States.  The sharp divide between liberals and conservatives has led to animosity between parties, gridlock, and even political violence. To be effective advocates for all our patients and regain the trust of a disillusioned pubic, SGIM must lead in bridging the political divide.  Two SGIM members with diverging views on political, social, and economic importance to medicine will discuss barriers to cooperation and how to overcome them, as well as the current state of free expression and diversity of thought at SGIM and its relevance in achieving our policy goals.

Learning Objectives
  1. Examine the evidence concerning political polarization in medicine and distrust of medical institutions
  2. Discuss commonly used clinical skills such as shared decision making, motivational interviewing, and critical evaluation of evidence to our discussions of controversial medical topics
  3. Utilize mutually respectful language and common goals to engage in productive conversations on health care policy
