Clinical Updates in Obesity Medicine

Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2025 Annual Meeting in Florida.

Recent estimates suggest over 45% of US adults have obesity, with highest rates among marginalized groups. Adults with obesity are 2-3 times more likely to have multi-morbidity, leading to increased healthcare utilization among patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.  It is essential for providers and researchers remain up-to-date on this most prevalent chronic disease. Presenters provide updates from seminal articles from the past year in these categories: endoscopic and surgical procedures, lifestyle treatment and counseling, medical education, and obesity-related policy concerns.

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify risks and benefits of the latest pharmacotherapies for obesity, and effectively counsel patients on available options for treatment
  2. Discuss the latest findings and recommendations on lifestyle treatment, including diet and physical activity
  3. Explore available tools for obesity treatment and identify opportunities to incorporate the latest evidence into clinical practice structure, including examples of advocacy for insurance coverage
