Clinical Updates in Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2025 Annual Meeting in Florida.

Cardiovascular (CV) disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States.  Three of the biggest contributors to CV disease are chronic conditions managed by general internists: diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.  Presenters review literature from the past two years to identify practice-changing studies on these three CV risk factors.  They will summarize study design, key findings, and strengths and limitations, as well as discuss the study’s impact on clinical care.

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia as major preventable causes of CV morbidity and mortality in the United States
  2. Outline new approaches to behavior, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine for CV risk reduction
  3. Apply updates in pharmacotherapy and interventional therapies in the realm of CV risk reduction to the clinical practice of general internal medicine
