Clinical Updates in Addiction Medicine

Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2025 Annual Meeting in Florida.

Nearly 48.7 million Americans had a diagnosis of a substance use disorder (SUD) in the past year, according to the most recent US National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2022).  Furthermore, in 2023 alone, there were an estimated 107,000 overdose deaths in the United States.  Despite the high prevalence of SUD and the burden of overdose death, fewer than 1 in 4 individuals with SUD have obtained any addiction treatment in the past year.  General internists can make a crucial difference by staying current on caring for individuals with SUD. Presenters have critically reviewed and will present high-yield, peer-reviewed literature from the past year that can guide internists in caring for patients with SUD. They have highlighted content relevant for academic general internists to inform clinical education and advocacy.

Learning Objectives
  1. Identify two recent advances in addiction medicine and their relevance to general medicine practice
  2. Identify one strategy to manage addiction in the context of other chronic medical conditions
  3. Describe one strategy to improve SUD care for medically underserved populations through direct care, program changes, or advocacy
