This session critically reviews and presents peer-reviewed literature and practice-changing updates from the past year that can guide general internists in caring for patients with substance use and substance use disorders. Content will include: overdose prevention and treatment, best practices in diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders in both primary care and hospital settings, the current state of health inequities and recent challenges and innovations in access to addiction care.
Learning Objectives
- Identify two recent advances in addiction medicine that internists can integrate into general medical practice
- Identify one strategy to manage addiction in the context of other chronic medical conditions
- Describe one evidence-supported strategy for strengthening care relationships with individuals with substance use disorder, ongoing substance use, or high risk, from substance use
- Identify how the epidemiology of substance use and overdose impact care utilization and, thus, treatment.
