This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2024 Annual Meeting in Boston.
Despite spending twice as much per capita on healthcare as the average Western nation, the United States endures health outcomes similar to those of less wealthy nations, with grave disparities across socioeconomic, racial, and geographic lines. Innovative payment models and proposed efficiencies borrowed from the business world have been touted as tools to promote health equity. The corporatization and privatization of healthcare is increasing, a phenomenon that is intertwined with the ballooning cost of healthcare in the United States and the increasing recognition of health inequity across socioeconomic, racial, and geographic lines. Despite successful public interventions during the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the healthcare system in the United States continues to cede control of public services to private, profit-driven entities that manage healthcare as a business. The expert speakers will illustrate the current state of privatization in the United States, and discuss ways in which internists and physician organizations can push back on the corporatization of our craft.
- Describe current trends in the privatization of Medicare and corporatization of physician practices
- Identify ways in which physician practices and medical institutions are influenced by private investments
- Evaluate the impact of private investments in regard to cost, outcomes, and administrative burden
- Discuss the ways in which a single-payer healthcare system would affect the delivery of care
