SGIM 2024 Plenary Panel
Trauma-Informed Clinical Approaches to the Care of Firearm Injury Victims and Families

Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2024 Annual Meeting in Boston.

Nearly 50,000 people in the U.S. die each year from firearm-related violence; nearly twice as many people are shot and survive, and the ripple effects of this trauma extend throughout families and communities.  Too often, the health care system focuses exclusively on the emergency and surgical care for patients in the immediate aftermath of an injury, but what is our role as internists in caring for patients and families who have been touched by this violence?  How do we recognize the needs of our patients and improve our clinical approach to trauma-informed care?  Through a discussion of these fundamental questions, this panel of survivors, clinicians, public health officials, and researchers focus on helping clinicians to reject the common feelings of helplessness so often associated with this complex issue and instead identify concreate steps within our own practice to make a difference in this national epidemic.
