Special Symposia: Paths to Increased Funding for Primary Care Practice

Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2024 Annual Meeting in Boston.

Exacerbated by chronic inadequate payment, primary care practices are experiencing financial challenges that are reducing access to care, threatening its ability to offer necessary services, and creating both workforce and pipeline shortages that threaten its existence.  At the same time, investors are creating new competition to mainstream primary care practices that are highly valued and are leveraging new payment designs, using approaches that have been difficult for mainstream primary care to adopt.  However, it is times of great challenge that can become times of opportunity, and there are many opportunities for change that we need to be aware of, and do our best to leverage as we work together to save, and strengthen, primary care.

This symposia discussed changes to Medicaid, efforts that can be made to both increase payment and changes to value based approaches.  The moderated discussion will share some are using legislative activity to increase primary care investment, and how to have more influence over these investments, as well as share a blended model of payment that combines fee for service and value-based payment.

  2. Discuss examples and innovations that others are doing to increase payments and address the value that primary care practices
