Special Symposia:  More Than Just Talk: Advancing Health Equity through Policy Change and Practice

Course Description

This is a recorded session from the SGIM 2024 Annual Meeting in Boston.

Despite decades of public health research, the connections between social factors and downstream health outcomes remain unseen by many internists.  In this symposia we have brought together emerging leaders in health equity, social and health justice to review the continuum of health care equity and describe how upstream factors are intricately tied to the delivery of care, while offering examples of how general internists have partnered with key stakeholders to impact policies that advance health equity.  Our panelists will discuss barriers and opportunities for achieving health equity through research, policy change, the care of special populations, and the physician pathway.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe upstream and downstream health care policies and how they perpetuate health inequities
  • Identify action steps to reduce inequities in health care delivery by general internists
  • Discuss how diversity in the physician workforce is a critical tool to promote health equity
  • Describe critical research gaps needed to continue to move toward a health care policy and practice environment that prioritizes health equity.
