Course Description
Burnout is a well-described and significant issue facing residents. Daily, residents are confronted with disparities in health outcomes due to issues within our health system. The incorporation of health advocacy training offers a tool to combat burnout and improve wellness through resident empowerment. This curricular toolkit teaches residents how to harness their experiences and write an op-ed piece about a topic of their choice.

Residents training in the practice of medicine are confronted with health care delivery challenges daily. These challenges, often related to the interplay between health equity, disparity, and health system financing, may frustrate residents and negatively impact their learning experience. This curriculum will provide clinical educators with content to teach a health advocacy skill that facilitates residents’ ability to effect change. In a workshop format, residents will learn to reflect on a clinical experience they encountered where a health policy or lack of appropriate health policy impacted their ability to provide patient care. They will reflect on that expereince in an Op-Ed piece to advocate for health policy changes. Examples include: drug pricing issues, access to primary care issues, stigma of infectious disease, and the need for Medicaid expansion.

Content includes: a facilitator’s guide with timeline and suggested supplemental readings, PowerPoint presentation with talking points, faculty development video to train your faculty and suggestions for tailoring this content to contemporary topics.
