Summary: ARIC has two components. The first component is a population cohort funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), which enrolled subjects age 45-64 in 1987-1989. Data collected includes evaluation of medical history, lifestyle factors, and laboratory and other cardiac diagnostic testing including a variety of both basic and specialized tests. The second component is a community surveillance program to evaluate incident cardiac events including myocardial infarction and heart failure, with data including abstracts of hospital records and EKGs.
