UPTODATE® Subscription Awards

Description

This program offers a donated one-year subscription of UpToDate® in Internal Medicine to up to twenty domestic hospitals/clinics/individuals who work in medically underserved areas, and who could benefit from access to UpToDate®, but who do not currently have funding to subscribe. These subscriptions will be awarded through a grant program conducted by SGIM and exclusively funded by UpToDate®, Inc.  For more information visit UpToDate® .

Submission Criteria

  1. Applicants must be primary care physicians who practice and/or teach in medically underserved communities (see #5 below), and do not currently have access to UpToDate®.
  2. To qualify for the grant, applicants must show evidence of need, including why their institutions cannot financially support subscriptions to UpToDate®.
  3. Applicants must briefly explain how an UpToDate® subscription will enhance their ability to provide high quality patient care and teaching.
  4. Membership in SGIM is not a submission requirement, however, SGIM members’ applications will be considered first.
  5. An underserved community is defined as one or more of the following:
      • a rural area more than 50 miles away from a city with a population of 400,000 or more;
      • a vulnerable population area (community with high proportion of minorities or low-income residents);
      • a health profession shortage area
      • a practice where more than 50% of the patients are: on Medicaid, uninsured, or identify as minorities.

Applicants must have access to a computer with Internet capabilities. Access to a printer is desirable, as UpToDate® contains patient information and other printable resources which could be valuable in an underserved setting.

Submission Requirements

An electronic file of the proposal, which is not to exceed two typed, double-spaced pages, and includes:

  1. A detailed description of the applicant’s clinical setting, role in the underserved community, and teaching responsibilities (if any)
  2. The method in which UpToDate® will be used to promote patient care and teaching within the underserved community.
  3. Why the applicants believes this subscription would enhance their ability to provide care. One paper version should also be sent.

Once funded, grantees are required to submit a 6 month written report and evaluation summarizing how they have used UpToDate® in their clinical work and/or teaching.

Evaluation Criteria

Selection criteria used by the committee to evaluate proposals include:

  1. Evidence that an UpToDate® subscription would improve the ability to provide care and/or teaching in a medically underserved community
  2. Evidence of need for financial support of an UpToDate® subscription
