New York Summer

Phoebe Prioleau

February 9, 2016

With his daughter draped
over his shoulder
a man climbs
subway steps, plastic pail
in one hand,
Yankees cap in the other.

As they ascend
into the air thick
with August damp
and roasting nuts,
the girl opens her eyes.
She points
to the sherbet-stained sky
and laughs.
