Here's to you, Sir Isaac Newton

You tell me I know nothing about love
and emotions, that I'm unfeeling and aloof.

I can tell you without words
that you feel my love
every time you open a textbook
every time you don't open a textbook.

Gravitational pull exists
and how you look like the stars,
your frequency hitting me just-so
to eject,
my love for you 
is photoelectric
arcing in a parabolic kinetic
disaster never achieving its apogee.

Sir Isaac Newton gave his prediction.
His second law tells that Forever
equals Missive Acceleration, the slope
of my aspirations to achieve a pace
where you can know undoubtedly,
that what I mean when I write
that equation is Forever equals
Genuine times Marry Me over Darling squared.

My invisible action pulls from you
an equal and opposite reaction.
His third law tells us it's impossible
to force a love in both directions.
But I can tell you Newton knows
nothing of the extra dimensions
where my love diffuses at a rate
directly proportional to its mass.

I can show you where it says
that his first law is a special case
of the second, that inertia moves
onward until an external force
compels it to divulge its secrets.
I'll make my love that entropic force
to scatter our world and let you find me 
in every piece you hold.

I'll diagram it out and present it to you
in PowerPoint, with animations
choreographed to dance for you
what I can't find myself to say.

Eric Wilson is currently a second year medical student at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He earned his bachelor's degree in Economics, Math, and French at Iowa State University and completed an MA in Economics at Duke University before pursuing medicine. In his spare time he enjoys reading, cooking, relaxing with his wife, and exploring the outdoors.
