Advocacy Skills Workshop: Those who can do AND teach

This half-day session is great for faculty or trainees interested in developing their advocacy skills and creating their own educational sessions on advocacy. Each sub-session will provide an interactive overview of approaches to health care advocacy, review details of current health care policy topics, and practice media and messaging skills based on those topics. We will begin by identifying who our lawmakers are, and how to find common ground with them on these issues. At the end of the session, participants be able to format policy and advocacy sessions for their own institutions.

Agenda

Part 1

  • 10 minutes Review the importance of health care advocacy, trends in policy and advocacy education in medical education
  • 10 minutes Identify participants' lawmakers and their opinions about health policy topics
  • 15 minutes Complete self-assessment quizzes on political opinions and degrees of tolerance
  • 15 minutes Review methods for finding common ground

Part 2:

  • 10 minutes Review current and proposed health care policies on prescription drug pricing
  • 5 minutes Review pearls for speaking with lawmakers "at the ropes" in person
  • 5 minutes Develop script for addressing participants' lawmakers on this topic
  • 5 minutes Share and hone messages
  • 10 minutes Review current and proposed health care policies on Medicaid expansion
  • 5 minutes Review pearls for writing an effective Tweet
  • 5 minutes Draft a Tweet addressing participants' lawmakers on this topic
  • 5 minutes Share and hone messages 

Break

Part 3:

  • 15 minutes Review current and proposed health care policies on Graduate Medical Education (GME) funding
  • 10 minutes Review pearls for writing an op-ed
  • 10 minutes Develop lede and outline for addressing participants' lawmakers on this topic
  • 5 minutes Share and hone messages
  • 10 minutes Review regional and institutional considerations when developing advocacy curricula for learners

Precourse Objectives:

After this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify current stakeholders and lawmakers of health care policy in their states and districts
  2. Analyze their own opinions and biases in health care debates
  3. Review current health care policy issues and identify opportunities for action in their policy districts
  4. Describe key components of an effective advocacy Tweet, op-ed, and "at the ropes" message
  5. Teach current health care policy topics and methods for advocating with region-specific nuances
