Annual Meeting One-on-One Mentoring Program

SGIM offers associates and faculty a valuable opportunity to speak privately with a senior SGIM mentor from a different institution. Mentors and mentees are matched based upon mutual interests and expectations, as well as designated career paths. Mentor-mentee pairs meet at least once during the annual meeting, and are encouraged to continue an ongoing relationship afterwards.  It is a low stress opportunity for associates to meet with more experienced SGIM members and receive fresh perspectives on professional goals and projects.

Topics of discussion may include:
  • Early Career Advice:  selecting a residency / fellowship, writing a CV, establishing career goals, or finding a mentor
  • Mid-Career Advice: getting promoted, mentoring others, or job negotiation
  • Research: writing grants, career development awards, writing manuscripts, advice on a specific research project, or feedback on an oral abstract presentation
  • Job responsibilities: teaching, clinical care, or administration
  • Professional challenges: personal / professional balance, conflict at work, or changing jobs

Mentoring pairs are expected to meet at least once during the SGIM meeting at a mutually convenient time.  After your initial meeting, mentoring pairs are welcome to meet again throughout the conference. Many mentors attend their mentee’s oral and/or poster presentation(s) to provide both support and feedback.
